Admission requirements
2.1 Applicants for the Bachelor of Economics degree must, in the first instance, satisfy the general University of Embu admission requirements.
2.2 In addition, they should have obtained a minimum of grade B in Mathematics offered in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, or their equivalents.
Duration of Study
i. This is a FOUR YEAR undergraduate program. Each year is broken into TWO semesters of 15 weeks each.
ii. Students are expected to cover FIFTY FOUR units of study, each with 45 contact hours.
iii. The 54 units shall include FOUR common courses.
iv. ONE common course shall be covered in each semester of the first and second years of study.
v. During the first and second years of study, students will be required to take SIXTEEN course units each year including the TWO common courses.
vi. During the third year of study, students will be expected to take a total of TWELVE course units, FOUR of which will be selected from third year electives.
vii. During the fourth and final year of study, students will be expected to take TEN course units, FOUR of which will be selected from a menu of fourth year electives.
General objectives or expected learning outcomes
By the end of this programme the students will be expected to:
1. Equip learners with an understanding of Economics and the ability to place economic and policy innovations within Governments, research institutions and international institutions.
2. Demonstrate the understanding of theoretical and practical issues critical for managers who often make rapid and far-reaching decisions about the short-term operations and long-term strategies of firms.
3. Develop learner’s self-confidence, skills and ability to critically evaluate economic decisions and develop solutions from ethical, professional as well as academic perspective.
4. Prepare learners for progression to higher post graduate degree study and research in Economics and statistics and related Economics areas.
Career prospects
The study of economics is central to understand business dynamics, markets, trade, government policies, international issues, globalisation, health, development, and the environment. This programme is for students intending to become analysts, advisors, and economists in the public and private sectors and leads to careers in business, international development, health, market analysis, management and research.
Requirements for graduation and degree classification
i) To qualify for the award of a degree, a candidate for the Bachelor of Economics shall take a minimum of 52 units during the four years of study
ii) The degree award and classification shall be based on the average score of all the units taken in the programme.
iii) The final award of the degree shall be classified into First Class, Second Class (Upper Division), Second Class (Lower Division) and Pass, based on (i) above. Honours shall be awarded to candidates passing in the First Class, Second Class (Upper Division) or Second Class (Lower Division).
